Erika Eatmon's freshman year at Ramsay High School would be life-changing in so many ways. The most impactful way was the meeting of Jameel Rucker, seated behind her in choir class. Jameel was able to get Erika's attention with his unique sense of humor and ultimately he was able to win her heart over time with his "charisma".
Following high school, both Erika and Jameel attended Auburn University; graduating in 2007. Their relationship grew, changed, drifted apart but fortunately allowed both Erika and Jameel to realize that together was where they wanted to be.
Erika and Jameel share a fondness of traveling back to Auburn for football games. Funny enough, neither attended any of the games as students. They also enjoy exploring new restaurants in Birmingham and hosting fun gatherings for friends to enjoy Erika's cooking and to hear Jameel brag about the greatness of Erika's food.
The couple recently began taking dance classes in preparation for their wedding day and the hope is for this new memory to continue throughout their marriage.
An extremely profound reflection was provided by Erika regarding their relationship. "Faith and forgiveness makes us work as a couple", she says. "Over the years I've learned to pray about our relationship, asking God to prepare us to be who He wants us to be as a married couple. I try to remember that we're both humans and will make mistakes, and if God can continue to forgive us daily, then we can extend each other the same grace in our relationship."
The moment came to move their relationship forward, and in perfect Jameel fashion, he was not willing to let the moment pass without a bit of perfectly timed humor. After 10 years together, Jameel proposed to Erika while "we were at home on a Saturday night and I was looking at Pinterest. I showed Jameel a picture of a ring that I liked, and he ran out of the room. I was so confused, then he came back and opened the ring box and said "like this ring?" I was stunned as he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him."
Although Erika was expecting a proposal, she was overjoyed with the moment and the arrangements made by Jameel to include a dear friend in helping Erika kick off the wedding planning process at the Southern Bridal Show.
On July 29, 2017, at the dreamy and intimate Avondale Villa in Birmingham, Alabama, Erika and Jameel vowed to love one another through good times and bad. In what can only be described as a Vintage Glam themed ceremony, Erika and Jameel celebrated their love with family and close friends and most importantly, stepped out together on their new life course.
