There are usually two sides to every story. In this situation, Mariah openly admits that she's telling her story!
Mariah Wilson met Joe Patrick III at the University of Alabama, where they both were students. The meeting occurred during Greek Week at a basketball game. Mariah recalls Joe approaching her and introducing himself. Small talk ensued but, according to Mariah, "I really didn't think anything of it." Later that weekend, the two would meet again at a sorority party and Joe seemed determined to make an impression. "He kept persisting that he buy me a drink, and I kept blowing him off. He eventually gave up and walked away."
Feeling bad and not wanting to offend, Mariah told her sorority sister to give Joe her phone number. "He texted me like the next day or two and asked me out to dinner", recalls Mariah. However, at that time, she admits, "I was dating someone"..."and didn't want to be seen in public on what would look like a date". So they settled on lunch in the student center. "From that day forward, we instantly clicked and formed a very tight friendship."
Mariah says falling for Joe happened over time. "Even when I knew I was totally in to him, I would never admit it and tried to keep things at the friend level." Thankfully, her efforts failed! However, with every life story comes detours. She adds, "you know that saying "if you love someone, let them go and if they come back they were always yours? Well, that quote is definitely true with us." Regardless of what happened in the middle, the only thing that matters in what happens in the end.
Mariah recounts one of her fondest memories with Joe, the summer of 2013. "Joe and I were like summer bffs. We did everything together, nothing special, basically a lot of bar hopping, running in the park, summer snow runs, movies, and hitting the pool. I worked as a desk assistant at one of the dorms at the University and Joe would even come and sit with me through my entire work shift. It felt like we were the only two people in the city."
Officially dating for two years, Mariah feels like "Joe and I are really partners in crime. We are so different but so much alike, and it just works so well for us."
The proposal came this past May, Mariah recounts, "I received my Masters of Science degree. My graduation was also on my birthday. A lot of my friends and family were in attendance. After graduation, all my love ones gathered outside for congrats and pictures. I remember someone saying "Oh Mariah, you and Joe have to take a picture together." So, as we posed to take the picture, I felt like everyone was acting a little weird but I brushed it off. They took the picture and told me to view it to see if I liked it. I looked at the picture and noticed that my friends were holding a sign behind my back. It read, "Will Marry You Me" not "Will You Marry Me". I turned around and Joe was on his knee. I was so happy; graduation, birthday, and engagement in one day. Even with the word mix up, it was so cute." We agree!
Mariah refers to their wedding theme as "Garden Glam". The two will be joined on March 10, 2018 in Montgomery, Alabama surrounded by their nearest and dearest. She admits to excitement for that day will be centered around, "just being officially husband and wife with my best friend and partying with all my friends and family." She also adds, "I hope Joe picks out an awesome honeymoon location so we can live it up the way we do best." Amen!
