Jamie Sullivan met Lewis Hammond freshman year in their first class at Birmingham Southern College. However, Jamie makes it clear, "we didn't start dating until a year later." Although the two admit to having crushes on each other during that time, Jamie states Lewis "didn't make a move until sophomore year." She adds, "he used paper balls in class to get my attention." It worked!
Jamie openly admits their love for one another grew over time. "We became friends first", she states. "He truly is my best friend." Through a shared love of being active, both are former athletes, and a mutual love of being from Birmingham, their friendship and relationship flourished.
Jamie affectionately reports Lewis's sense of humor is her one endearing thing about him. "He truly is the funniest person I have ever met. We're always laughing." She goes on to say, "Lewis's ability to always laugh keeps a positive outlook and makes loving him so easy."
After dating for over 5 years, the moment arrived on May 6, 2016. Lewis decided the time had come to propose to Jamie. Somewhat suspecting but not quite expecting, Jamie recalls the events of that day. "Our favorite spot in Birmingham is at the top of the hill by Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. So after a fancy dinner (my suspicions were slightly heightened), he took me to our spot, and gave me a letter. In that letter, Lewis told me his promises, vows, and plans for a life for us to build together. As I looked up, I saw him get down on one knee and ask!"
To make this moment even more special, Lewis was able to propose with his great-grandmother's ring. Jamie adds, "that was extremely sentimental."
The date was set, April 22, 2017, and the location was perfect, The Sonnet House in Leeds, Alabama, for Lewis and Jamie to make a life-long commitment of love and friendship and become Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hammond before 150 of their beloved family and friends.
Jamie reports their wedding day was memorable in so many ways. "First, I was adamant of foregoing a first look and to wait to see him until walking down the aisle." She adds, "In order to calm my nerves and chat a little, we wrote each other letters and read them while holding hands around a chapel door. That was such an intimate and exciting moment that made me realize "OH, I'M GETTING MARRIED!" Secondly, for Jamie, "the moment we locked eyes as I started walking down the aisle is a moment I'll always cherish."
The sentimental and heartwarming moments kept coming at Jamie and Lewis's wedding. Jamie reports her father passed her senior year of high school. She had a locket with "his picture put on my bouquet so I could still have a part of him walk me down the aisle."
Jamie's twin sister's fiance built the cross as well as the arbor for the ceremony. Also, Jamie commissioned Sherri Arias to do a watercolor of "my mom and myself in wedding day attire by taking pictures and putting them together." Finally, Lewis and Jamie exchanged gifts. Lewis gift to Jamie was a ruby necklace (her birthstone) and her gift to Lewis was a watch that proudly wore during that day.
Sidenote. The groom's was also a surprise for Lewis simply because he wasn't expecting to have one. Jamie designed the cake herself and presented to a shocked Lewis.
Looking stunning in a Martina Liana gown from Ivory and White, Jamie's classic, traditional Southern vision was realized. With the assistance of Ellen Morgan of The Sonnet House, Jamie and Lewis's wedding day was filled with unforgettable memories, great service and love from family and friends.
Jamie and Lewis honeymooned in beautiful St. Lucia and will reside in Birmingham, Alabama, where they are going to be #HappilyHammondAfter!
